New Kristen Interview with Now Toronto

Kristen Stewart swears a lot. This instantly makes her a human being rather than the tabloid icon she’s unwillingly become at age 22 thanks to the Twilight saga and its constant media presence.

Stewart’s at the Toronto Film Festival with On The Road, an adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s classic beat novel in which she plays Marylou, the sexually adventurous child bride of the charismatic Dean Moriarty. (Yes, there are nude scenes. No, they aren’t explicit.) She’s been paired with Garrett Hedlund, who plays Moriarty, and the two of them are at their most animated when discussing the freewheeling, improvisational style director Walter Salles encouraged during the rehearsal process.

“I tortured myself in the most amazing, wonderful way for four weeks,” she says, “and then as soon as the four weeks were done it was like, ‘You need to stop thinking, because if you don’t you’re gonna regret this entire experience. You’re gonna look back and say: I fucked up. I thought too much.’”

Stewart says the fact that she was playing a real person – the aforementioned Henderson, who was the basis for Kerouac’s fictional Marylou – made her a little more careful about her own improvisations.

“It’s always fun to have freedom and have, like, happy accidents where you go, ‘Wow, that’s cool, I didn’t expect that,’” she says. “But when you’re playing somebody who’s [actually] existed, you know.…” And she stops herself, rethinking her position on the fly.

“I don’t want to discredit what it feels like to play a character who’s been written by somebody,” she continues. “You feel just as responsible to the writer and to everyone who’s been affected by that character.”

There is no doubt in my mind that she’s referring to Bella Swan. And I have to respect her instincts; given how many millions of people worship the Twilight movies and could turn on her in a second for a valid observation taken out of context, it’s the savvy thing to do. But it’s also crap, and she knows it, because as soon as she’s finished that statement, Stewart returns to her real point and her energy shoots right back up.
“I’ve played Joan Jett,” she says, “and because she was on set every day I couldn’t improv. I couldn’t. Everything I said, I spoke to her about it. You know – you can’t put words in their mouths unless you know. Unless you really feel it, and it’s coming from the right place.”

Tom Hiddleston Mentions Robert

What's it like to beat the likes of Robert Pattinson, Brad Pitt and George Clooney to the title of Total Film's Sexiest Actor?

“It's insane. It basically doesn't make any sense. When I was a teenager, my sister had a poster of Brad Pitt from Legends Of The Fall on her bedroom wall. I also thought it was generally accepted that George Clooney was some kind of gold standard? And doesn't Robert Pattinson inspire mayhem and delirium wherever he goes?

Walter Salles Talks About Kristen

Luckily for Salles, he was able to hang onto key components of his cast, including the skyrocketing Stewart.

“I think she brought an immense passion but also an intelligence to her role,” Salles said. “She knew it really well before we even met, just after I saw Sean Penn’s Into the Wild. This was before the Twilight Saga had started.”

“I said, ‘I really liked Penn’s film and you were wonderful in it. I’m considering the possibility of doing On the Road.’ And she said, ‘It’s one of the books I prefer; it’s on my bedside table. I would love to play Marylou one day.’ I said, ‘This is exactly what I’m talking about.’”

Stewart reveals a more carefree side of herself in the film, even appearing topless as she plunges into a racy sex scene with playful abandon. It was all par for the course, according to Salles.

“There was not a day where she didn’t ask me to try something different and go beyond the page. It was a great experience. And the fact that we were shooting Montreal helped a lot. We were not invaded by paparazzi or other things that are now very present in Kristen’s life.”

New Pictures + Interview of Kristen in W Magazine February 2013 Issue

"Everyone asks about the nude scenes in On The Road, but I also had to dance, and dancing is harder than being naked. My character, Marylou, is so exuberant, and I had five minutes to do something that showed she was sort of like the craziest motherfucker around. In the book, it says, "Dean takes Marylou and they do a love dance and no one can take their eyes off them." It's one sentence. And I was mad intimidated by it.

We did the dance four times to the song "Salt Peanut". By the end, I was as red as fire truck. I was holding onto Garrett (Hedlund) because I was going to fall over. I almost passed out ever single time."

Eddie Redmayne Mentions Kristen

On working with his favorite talents: Redmayne: I was lucky enough to work with Julianne Moore, and Cate Blanchett and Kristen Stewart. They’re all actors who I really admire. I love that thing of when you work with somebody and you have a shorthand, and the next job you can start from there and progress further. I would love to work with them again.

Kristen Talks About Garrett in Details Magazine

Kristen Stewart, who plays Marylou, Moriarty’s ex-wife and still-tumultuous lover, in On the Road, recalls that Hedlund was “always scribbling something in his notebook. We all heard tidbits. He was writing this on-the-fly poetry, which was beautifully reminiscent of what we were doing.”

Separating the Beat character from the Beat-inspired actor wasn't always easy. "Everytime I'd see him," Stewart says of the years-long interim between casting and filming, when financing stalled production, "I'd be like, 'Are you already doing it?' He just never let up." That "free spririt" cited by Salles manifested itself after filming, when Hedlund would "just take off walking," Stewart says. Once, after Stewart let him lead her on an aimless 4 A. M. exploration of Montreal, she finally protested, "Dude, you don't know where you're going!" "But he just kept on walking," she recalls.

“On The Road” (Screening was on 9th December)

Roger Durling with Actors Garrett Hedlund and Kristen Stewart

Roger Durling: Garret, you’ve been involved with this project from the get-go, how many years has it been?

Garrett Hedlund: Since 2007.

Durling: And I read that you gave up other opportunities with other films to be in this project. What was it that made you so adamant about being a part of it?

Hedlund: You’d be crazy not to, you know when Walter gave me this role, I thought it was one of the most incredible things that had ever happened to me. And also, you know, I was a big fan of the book. I read it for the first time, I was seventeen, and a lot of the other writers from the beats and just literature in general had such a huge influence on me. I felt that to be involved with something as iconic as this was an opportunity of a lifetime, really. And I could go as deep as I could in terms of research, I mean, we had time. The film wasn’t greenlit at the point when I signed on, so there was years of meeting the family members of the characters in the book. You know, Dean Moriarity was the alter ego of Neal Cassady, so I spent a lot of time with John Cassady, his son. I got to go to San Francisco and meet with some of the other beat writers and sit down with them. I spent a lot of time reading Kerouac and Cassady and all the letters, I read all of the writers that inspired them – Proust, and Nietzche and Wolfe. So it was, you know, really incredible.

Durling: And Kristen, you’ve also been involved with this project for a very long time, since, Into The Wild with Sean Penn?

Kristen Stewart: It was a little after that. I think it was in 2007, I was seventeen.

Durling: What was it that attracted you to this role?

Stewart: On The Road was my first favorite book. I read it as a freshman in high school. And then when I heard Walter was directing it I would have done anything to be involved. I would have been his assistant on it. I would have done craft service. The reason you love something, it’s so clear. I don’t even really remember the details of the initial conversation; I think I just drove away shaking. I mean I was fairly certain. Not necessarily that I would get the part, because it could have been decades and we still would have had to wait fifty years for it to begin, but that I wanted to commit to something like that. Which is obviously, at least the way I remember, so irresponsible of me. I wasn’t ready for that part yet, at all. I got involved when Garrett did, and if fifty years had gone by and we’d missed out then it would have been a really painful experience.

Kristen About Her Style in ELLE UK Magazine

David Cronenberg Interview

DETAILS: Did having someone as marketable as Robert Pattinson in the lead help get Cosmopolis made?

DAVID CRONENBERG: It's not just Rob, but this was a Canadian-French co-production so actors like Juliette Binoche and Mathieu Amalric really do contribute to the strength that you have when you're trying to find money. What matters is, do you have a good actor working with you?

DETAILS: What made you want to cast Rob? This part is so far removed from what his enormous Twilight fan base would normally see him in.

DAVID CRONENBERG: Surprisingly enough they were very interested in it and developed websites for Cosmopolis just because of Rob. And a lot of the girls were talking about reading "Cosmopolis." I think the only thing they had read, probably, was "Twilight" and "Harry Potter," and suddenly they're reading Don DeLillo.

DETAILS: There's a very slick, high-tech fashion to the film. What was your inspiration for the look of Rob's character?

DAVID CRONENBERG: It all comes from what the characters are supposed to be in the movie. They're both very wealthy. They're both very comfortable with their wealth. It's interesting because some people have asked, "Is Rob's fame a parallel to Packer?" And I say, "No, quite the contrary. Eric Packer is not famous at all. He doesn't want his name in the paper." He dresses well, but sort of conventionally. In fact, Rob said that he wanted the guy to be dressed in almost a non-descript way. It's expensive clothes, but it's not flashy.

DETAILS: Maps to the Stars is supposed to start shooting in May. Have you been able to sign Robert Pattinson, Viggo Mortensen, and Rachel Weisz?

DAVID CRONENBERG: I don't think Viggo will be able to do it, but with the other two, so far, so good. Have they signed? No. But they have a verbal commitment if everything works out and if other things don't come along. It's still very possible for the three of them, but it's far from certain. That's life in the indie film world.

Davivd Cronenberg Talks About Cosmopolis

The Blu-ray release of Cosmopolis is coming out in the heart of Oscar-campaign season. I get the sense it doesn't bug you too much that this film isn't being discussed more as a contender.

Yes. Every year I try to be as disconnected as possible. This year it's been very easy because we haven't been nominated for any awards. It's not sour grapes, it's not compensation; it's a relief. It's very easy to get caught up in it if you are nominated. The people who are releasing the movie get excited, they want you to do more, and you understand it because the awards can maybe get more people to see the film. This, on its face, is a good thing. However, it is all bullshit, it is all annoying and it is all very problematical. But it gives people stuff to write about, gives structure, we understand. But I won't be watching any of the awards shows.

End of the year lists, though — Cosmopolis did end up placing second in Cahiers du Cinema's top ten of the year.

Yes and on Sight and Sound's list, as well.

So the snooty-pants Euros are digging the movie. And, it'll no doubt end up somewhere on my top 20, I think. [Note: it came in at #12.]

If I gave you money would you put it higher?

No. Well?

Depends how much money. C'mon, let's talk. A hundred grand goes a long way.

Would you give me a hundred grand to write that Cosmopolis is the best movie of the year?

No! [Laughs.] But it's a thought.

[...] Sorry, so... Cosmopolis on Blu-ray. Special deleted scenes on here?

I'm usually reluctant to include deleted scenes. They're deleted for a reason. I like the the magic. On A History of Violence I included one or two because they were unusual, but that's the only time I've done that. On the other hand, I really appreciate a good “making of” documentary. I find that film students and film fans who might otherwise never get on a film set might really see something if you, the creator, are honest. Of course, I'm not doing the “making of” myself — I'm too busy making the movie — but I do encourage the reality principle. I don't want the “making of” to just be a promotional spot. Similarly, when I do a commentary, as I've done for Cosmopolis, I don't bullshit. I don't just say how wonderful is to work with or how much fun we had at the wrap party. I talk about the making of that particular moment we're looking at.

Is your next project ready to go?

Finishing my novel right now, and I hope to be shooting Maps of the Stars in May, written by Bruce Wagner. However, it is an indie project which means, therefore, that it could fall apart.
